David is fully up to the challenge. He makes a shrewd response, which can be summarized:

a Oh, God, you shouldn't have ....

b. but since you did, I will count heavily on it.'

In verses 18-21, in an act of appropriate deference, David asserts God's greatness, his own insignificance, and the unutterable distance between the two. This is standard court talk with appropriate humility and self-abasement. This prayer seems to be the most calculating of the prayers we shall consider. In verse 19, David slips in a note of reminder, just in case God forgets: you said the promise would last awhile ("for a distance").
